Buyer Beware! Do you know what you are really purchasing?

Updated: 6 days ago

We take great pride in the STEINBAUER brand and always convey our message.

If our name isn't on the module, then it isn't a STEINBAUER.

Unfortunately some customers find this out the hard way. From engine fires to catastrophic engine failure, we've seen and heard it all.

I recently took a call from a very distressed customer late on a Saturday afternoon, it was peak harvest season and all three of his combines were down in the field. He was convinced that he had purchased STEINBAUER modules for his new machines. After some back and forth, I agreed to drive out to his farm to see what the issue was.

All three of his new combines were out of operation and sitting in the field when I arrived, what I discovered was that not only were the modules that he thought were STEINBAUER, were actually a different brand, but that the salesperson who had installed them, had also deleted the emissions on the machines. Double whammy!

The customer was obviously angry, but apologetic that I had driven a couple hundred miles to help him with an issue we hadn't created. He had purchased STEINBAUER modules in the past and was assured by the salesperson that he was getting STEINBAUER again for his new combines.

For me, this kind of deception is unacceptable - but over the past 2-3 years it has become commonplace. People see a way to make fast money and take advantage of farmers who walk the thin red line of profit and input costs.

Unfortunately this customer has been left with engine repair bills in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, he needs to return the emissions systems to factory standard, more money and his manufacturer warranty hangs in the balance. The 'salesperson' that he purchased the products from, is no longer answering his phone and the company that manufacturers the product - has no US base of operations. Meaning trying to get compensation from them will be literally impossible.

So how can you avoid this costly mistake?

  • All STEINBAUER products carry our brand. Either out entire STEINBAUER logo or the shortened SP version.

  • STEINBAUER does NOT reflash or change any settings on your machines ECU. Beware of anyone who plus into the OBD port - this is flash tuning!

  • Always ask if the salesperson or dealer is an Authorized STEINBAUER dealer, if in doubt - call us. We are happy to verify if the person standing in front of you is actually a STEINBAUER dealer or not.

  • Ask questions! Does the manufacturer of the product they sell have a US base of operations? Do they carry liability insurance in the event of damage? Where is the product manufactured? How long have they manufactured products for Agricultural machinery?

At the end of the day, deciding to upgrade the power and torque on your machine is a big decision, with many factors to consider. So use caution, your machine is an expensive investment, we ask you take a little extra time and don't always take what the salesperson standing in front of you is 100% telling you the truth. At STEINBAUER we like to give you as much information as we can, good, bad or otherwise. We encourage questions.

And what about deleting the emissions system? It's simple, just don't do it. No matter what the person doing the deleting tells you.

  • Manufacturers can see OTA that your emission system is not operating correctly.

  • When you delete the emissions system you remove the ability to troubleshoot multiple issues. Causing longer downtime.

  • It can limit your ability to sell the machine, you will be required to return it to OEM emissions standard to trade your machine in at a dealership.

  • Any OTA pushed update or if a factory tech servicing the machine will override the flash tune.

  • Deleting the emissions will void the machine warranty.
